Sharing the voices of the homeless
Other Aucklanders is a collection of the thoughts and stories of some of Auckland's homeless. It's easy to make generalisations and assumptions about the homeless but a person is more than just their circumstances. Each individual who sleeps on the street has an intricate history, thoughts, passions, and skills. Other Aucklanders was created to share the voices of the homeless and express these aspects of their identities.
"Music is my passion. I was into listening to it and playing it, performing at festivals and expressing my culture. I like music because it expresses how I feel and how I am doing"
Homelessness in Auckland is a massive, growing issue. Each night roughly 150 Aucklanders sleep on the streets. These 'streeties' are severed from the rest of Auckland. They are vulnerable, often isolated, and their voices are not being heard. For this issue to be tackled understanding of, and empathy for the homeless is crucial. Other Aucklanders hopes to inspire this understanding and empathy by sharing the stories and thoughts of the homeless.
We need to start looking out for and listening to all Aucklanders
"When you see me begging be objective. It's not like all beggars simply want to get an easy hand out. There are many factors as to why I am on the street, it can be as simple as never having a dad."
